“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” ~ 1 John 5:14-15.
The verse above highlights a significant point: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God.” There is a special confidence we possess when we approach God according to His will.
Consider this example: As a parent, you decide to give your child a piece of biscuit. If your child asks for it, there would be no hesitation in giving it because you already intended to do so. However, if you withhold it, it’s not out of dislike for your child but because you believe it’s not the right time for them to have it. This is similar to how God deals with us.
When we ask in accordance with His will, as the loving Father He is, He willingly gives to us. But when our requests contradict His will, it shouldn’t surprise us if we don’t receive a favorable response. Remember, God’s will for us is always good and designed to bring us to an expected end. So, even when His will doesn’t align with our desires, it is ultimately for our benefit.
With this understanding, how do we pray according to God’s will? By praying the Scriptures. When faced with challenges, instead of worrying or despairing, why not turn to God’s Word to see what He says about the situation?
Is it an illness? Jesus Christ has already provided healing through His sacrifice on the cross of Calvary.
Are you concerned about finances? Scripture reassures us that “the righteous will never be forsaken, nor their seed beg for bread.”
Facing spiritual challenges? Colossians 2:15 reminds us that, “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”
As believers, we share in this victory. That’s why in Luke 10:19, Jesus declares, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
Whatever the challenge may be, our Lord Jesus Christ has already made provisions for us through His death on the cross. Therefore, when we bring our challenges to God, backed by His Word, we can be confident that our prayers will be answered. Though the answers may delay, they will surely come.
