“Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” ~ Romans 6:6.
The burial of Christ is more than a historical event, it is a spiritual declaration. It marks the complete end of the old life and the final separation from the dominion of sin. Just as His death was necessary, so also was His burial. For it is in burial that things are put away, no longer to be seen, no longer to have influence.
When Christ was laid in the tomb, it signified that the work of dealing with sin was complete. The life He carried on behalf of humanity; the burden of sin placed upon Him, was not only crucified but also buried. This speaks to finality. Sin was not merely addressed; it was put away.
Through identification with Christ, we see that our “old man”, our former nature, bound by sin and separated from God, was not only crucified with Him but buried with Him as well. As written in Romans 6:4, “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death…” This means that the person we used to be, enslaved to sin, has been laid to rest.
The burial of Christ reminds us that we are no longer defined by our past, our failures, or our sinful nature. Those things have been buried. They no longer have authority over us. Too often, we try to resurrect what God has already put away; old habits, old mindsets, old identities, but the truth remains: what is buried is meant to stay buried.
Furthermore, His burial affirms the completeness of redemption. There was no unfinished work left behind. Everything necessary for our freedom was accomplished fully. As seen in Colossians 2:12, we are “buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith…” pointing not only to an end, but to a new beginning.
The grave, therefore, is not just a place of silence, it is a place of transition. It represents the closing of one chapter and the preparation for another. What goes into the grave does not come out the same way.
Prayer: My sins have been buried in the grave, never to be resurrected. Father help me live a life consecrated to you.
