WHY WE OUGHT TO FELLOWSHIP WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT (I)

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”~ John 14: 16-17

First, before we dive into why we need to fellowship with the Holy Spirit, it is important to re-emphasize that the Holy Spirit is not separate from God. Remember, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three in one.

With that established, why do we need to fellowship with the Holy Spirit?

When Jesus was about to leave, He knew that His disciples, and humanity in general, needed help. Why? Because, left to ourselves, our flesh is weak. He understood that His disciples and followers would not be able to walk this Christian journey without the help of the Lord. That is why He promised to send us a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to be with us forever—to live with us and within us.

Notice that Jesus says the Holy Spirit “lives with you and will be in you.”

Now, how can someone live with you and be in you, yet you have no fellowship with them? This highlights the importance of fellowship.

To activate the Holy Spirit within us and begin to walk in the authority we carry inside, we first need to connect with the Spirit who dwells within us.

For example, if you have a lamp holder and a bulb but they are not connected, you won’t get any light.

The same principle applies to us and the Holy Spirit. We have the Holy Spirit within us, but we need to connect and fellowship with Him to activate His gifts (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) and His fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) in our lives.

In fact, if we refer back to the Scripture, Jesus says, “The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him.”

This implies that there is already an expectation for us to know Him—to fellowship, communicate, and relate with Him.

So, reason number one as to why we need to fellowship with the Holy Spirit? Because Jesus expects us to.

Prayer point: Lord, help me to fellowship with the Holy Spirit as You would want me to.
